Productivity looks different for everyone
We often measure productivity by one-size-fits-all standards: hours worked or tasks completed. But for neurodivergent people, those metrics might not align with their unique strengths and working styles. That doesn’t mean it’s a problem.
Some neurodivergent people are hyperfocused some days, but might struggle to concentrate on other days. This doesn’t mean they’re working less than their colleagues. They may be doing the same or more, but doing it in in a different way.
The key for employers is understanding that productivity is not about how someone works, but about the impact they create. It doesn’t take much to support diverse working styles.
🔹Flexible schedules🔹
Some people thrive early in the morning; others work best later in the day. Allowing flexible working hours can empower everyone to work at their peak times and produce their best work.
🔹Clear communication🔹
Everyone appreciates clarity, but for neurodivergent people, this is particularly important. Break down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and clearly define expectations and deadlines. Ensure people can ask for clarification if they need it.
🔹Adjust the environment🔹
Open offices might be stimulating for some and overwhelming for others. Noise-cancelling headphones, quiet areas or remote work options can help people stay focused.
🔹Tailor performance metrics🔹
Instead of focusing on hours worked, prioritise outcomes. For example, is someone’s work being done accurately and on time? That’s what matters most.
🔹Ask and listen🔹
Creating an inclusive space starts with open conversations. Ask your team members what helps them thrive and make adjustments if necessary.
When employers embrace neurodiversity, teams benefit from fresh perspectives, creative problem-solving and increased innovation. More importantly, they create a culture where everyone feels valued, supported and empowered to contribute in their own way.
Reframing how we see productivity and celebrating how we work, rather than just what we produce, empowers both individuals and teams.
